Doug Chapin or Tom Emmer:
Who can you trust to protect Social Security?
Nearly half of America’s seniors rely on Social Security as their only source of income in retirement. But they will suffer a 22 percent cut in benefits in six short years if Congress does not act.
Democrats like Doug Chapin will work to secure Social Security
Social Security was started by Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide workers income if they became disabled, retired, or died. Their families would also receive benefits if the worker passed away.
Workers earn these benefits through the taxes taken from their paychecks. No other government program has done more to reduce poverty.
Today, affording basic needs and economic inequality are worse than when Social Security began. The rising cost of living affects Republicans and Democrats alike. Protecting Social Security should not be a political issue, but it is.
The DFL says “passage of the Social Security Expansion Act“ is one of its main goals.
The Social Security Expansion Act
- Completely funds Social Security for 75+ years.
- Across-the-board benefit increases of $200/month.
- Everyone pay their fair share.
This current Congress, led by Tom Emmer, will hasten its end
Tom Emmer, as the GOP Whip, will hasten its end
Tom Emmer is the third-ranking Republican leader in the House. As Majority Whip, his job is to make sure other members vote the way leadership wants them to.
This year, that has meant significant funding cuts and policy changes to Medicaid and the Health Insurance Marketplaces, Medicare physician payment and medical student loans, among other health care related items, all of which will worsen patient access to care.
The House Republican Study Committee speaks for most House Republicans. They put forward a budget that would cut Social Security by $1.5 trillion.
The Minnesota Republican Party says “phasing out” Social Security is one of its main goals.
Effects of privatizing Social Security
- It depletes the trust fund quicker, deep cuts in benefits.
- No guaranteed benefits for future retirees.
- No benefits for disability or survivors.
